Frequently Asked Questions

AeroGardens are designed to help you grow your own herbs, vegetables, salad greens or flowers at home. Our Seed Pod Kits are compatible with every model of AeroGarden. Planting with Seed Pods is fun and easy! Just insert the pre-seeded pods in your garden, add water, and the patented, specially formulated Liquid Nutrients. Most plants germinate within 7-14 days, are ready for harvesting in 4-6 weeks, and will keep producing continuous harvests for up to 6 months and longer. Indoor gardening can’t get any tastier or simpler!
Lettuce is one of the fastest-growing indoor crops and it's a staple. Who doesn't love to be healthy with delicious home-grown lettuce, or add a fresh leaf of romaine on their sandwich, or a salad of tasty arugula? And with AeroGarden, you can enjoy delicious Spring greens all throughout fall and winter!

Different types of plants take different amounts of time to germinate and grow. In general, we’ve found these germination timeframes to be consistent:

  • Flowers take about 7-12 days
  • Salads: 5-8 days
  • Herbs: 5-15 days
  • Fruiting vegetables (such as tomatoes and peppers): 7-14 days

If any of your seed pods don’t germinate after 21 days, contact us so we can send out a replacement for you under our 100% germination guarantee.

After each planting, we recommend cleaning and sanitizing your AeroGarden for the best results.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Garden Siphon I bought this item so that I could exchange water in my Bounty garden. Poor quality materials. Must be pumped continuously to work. A turkey baster would probably do the job as well.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Rinse & Refill Siphon First one had to be replaced. The second one worked, but you do have to pump it the whole time. So I’m not sure how long the siphon will last.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Refill syphon Doesn’t work unless you keeping squeezing bulb. Not worth it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from just use a tube as long as the container the water is going INTO is lower than the container the water is coming FROM - tada! Siphon.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Keeps you busy squeezing the bulb All the joints leak air and will not work as a siphon. Tightening the joints only makes it worse. AeroGarden should find a better product for less money that works.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible siphon for this use! Horrible siphon for this use! It is a reversed gas siphon for getting gas out of a car just with the long hose switched where the short pipe would be to put in the gas can. This creates the problem of needing to get enough water over the point where gravity will take hold of it and pull all the water out of the tank. You have to hold the siphon just right so that the whole hose files with water as you are pumping the squeeze pump that it flows over the gravity arch or no dice. Which leads to the second and more major problem, the squeeze pump itself. It is a threaded screw in fitting with rubbery plastic, you can guess what that leads to...it lets air in like crazy and it pops off all the time! There is a back flow valve just below it where the straight pipe ends and without a tight seal there is no way to get enough water through to get the gravity siphon going so you have to sit there pumping until your tank is empty! For a disabled person like me who has muscle problems this was absolute hell! The fix is to get a small tube of food grade silicone sealant and put it on the top threads being careful not to get any down near the back flow valve, then thread the two parts together making sure you have enough to squeeze out when they come together making a nice gasket. To AeroGarden's credit their customer service is great! I mean really A+++, after the first one didn't work, they sent me another one right out and they would have kept sending them out until I got one that worked. I happen to have a lot of knowledge about siphons, so I told them what was wrong and how to fix it and I did. I also told them that they should switch to an inline squeeze pump with the pump already past the gravity arch for a much easier siphon for their customers to use. No matter what the problem is their customer service is great, so not even a worry over the siphon in the long run.

Questions

How do you rinse and refill the Harvest without damaging one's herbs? Do you have a video or illustrated directions?

Asked by: helen
We do not have a video but are happy to walk you through it. Through testing in our labs, we've seen significantly better growth with what we call a "rinse and refill".  You can do this once a month when it is time to add nutrients. Here's how to do it: Remove the Grow Deck from your garden with all the plants still in the tray.  Set it off to the side in a cookie sheet or mixing bowl of an appropriate size.  If you have a pump in your garden unplug it from the base. Bring your AeroGarden bowl over to your sink.  Empty out the water and rinse through the bowl with fresh water a few times. There is no need to scrub the bowl or use any cleaning products.  Fill the bowl with fresh water.  Place the Grow Deck back over the bowl and place back onto your garden.  Plug the pump back into the base of the garden. Add nutrients to the water as usual then press the reset button.  That's it!  Nutrients perfectly balanced!  It's easy and takes less than 5 minutes. Best of all, you'll see a difference in the health, vitality, and lifespan of your plants. We hope this helps!

In any model, what is the most effective way of changing the water monthly when you have many plants growing and long roots? Seems like the roots would be sucking up air if they were exposed out of water, not to mention a huge mess.

Asked by: aurorasky
Most hydroponic applications recommend complete changes of nutrient solution every week! At AeroGrow, we spent years testing and designed our gardens to grow wonderfully even if you NEVER do a full nutrient change. That's a pretty big deal! But that doesn't mean it can't grow even better. Through testing in our labs, we've seen significantly better growth with what we call a "rinse and refill". It is best to do this once a month when the nutrient light comes on. Here's how to do it: You will need to remove the Grow Deck from your garden with all the plants still in the tray. Place the Grow Deck back over the bowl and place it back onto your garden. Plug the pump back into the base of the garden. -OR- You can use our specially sized siphon to quickly drain all the nutrient solution in the AeroGarden into the sink or a bucket ( see picture to the right). Add nutrients and water as usual then press the reset button. That's it! Nutrients are perfectly balanced! It's easy and takes less than 5 minutes. Best of all, you'll see a difference in the health, vitality, and lifespan of your plants.

How often should I change the water in my aero garden? Every other time I add nutrients? I am growing cherry tomatoes.

Asked by: DarylG
We highly recommend doing regular rinses and refills of your water bowl. Every 4-6 weeks (or every other time you add nutrients, is an easy reminder), empty the water bowl and add fresh water and Liquid Plant Food. This will help to reset the balance of nutrients in your water and keep your plants happy and healthy.
