Frequently Asked Questions

How do AeroGardens work?

AeroGardens are designed to help you grow your own herbs, vegetables, salad greens or flowers at home. Our Seed Pod Kits are compatible with every model of AeroGarden. Planting with Seed Pods is fun and easy! Just insert the pre-seeded pods in your garden, add water, and the patented, specially formulated Liquid Nutrients. Most plants germinate within 7-14 days, are ready for harvesting in 4-6 weeks, and will keep producing continuous harvests for up to 6 months and longer. Indoor gardening can’t get any tastier or simpler!

How do I prune Herbs?

Pruning your herbs is important to keep them growing and healthy in your AeroGarden. You can start pruning when the plants are about 2 inches tall. We recommend only pruning about ⅓ of the plant at a time. When growing herbs, keep in mind basil usually sprouts within a week of planting, and grows rapidly. Be sure to prune your basil from the top as needed to keep the grow lights at the lowest position until all the herbs have a chance to catch up. Raising the grow light to accommodate the basil can slow or stop growth for other smaller, slower-growing herbs.

Can I grow different types of plants at the same time?

Yes, you can mix different types of plants in your AeroGarden to grow a variety of herbs, salad, veggies, and flowers if you’d like. If you are growing different plant types, it is important to prune the taller and bushier plants as they grow to allow plenty of space and light for the shorter and smaller plants.

How do I clean my AeroGarden before starting a new garden?

After each planting, we recommend cleaning and sanitizing your AeroGarden for the best results.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it -- but . . . light timer problem My friends who gave this to me as a present told me that the light timer goes crazy and, sure enough, it worked fine for one week, 15 hours on, with auto turn-on at the specified time --- but . . . after the first week the light suddenly turned on in the middle of the "dark" time. I can reboot it, and live with it, but I think the various electronic features should be better tested. My friends also said that for "Add Food" and "Add Water" they had to mark reminders on their calendar because the indicators are unreliable. Same comment. But I will reboot and live with the problems, because, my herbs are growing ! And I love that. Nice "daylight" when it's on.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great hydroponic garden! This is my third hydroponic garden from Aerogarden; I also have a Harvest Elite and a Twelve System. This unit replaced a much earlier model of the Harvest where the lights no longer functioned and could not be replaced, but Aerogarden gave me a great discount on this purchase. This unit is simpler in function and very easy to set up and use. The button on the back, to raise the lights, is definitely an improvement over the old "yank and pull" setup. I am currently growing petunias in this unit, and they are already blooming. Some people hoard cats (we don't qualify, with only two), but I could definitely become an Aerogarden hoarder!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Notorious Plant Killer Finally Grew Something My mom bought this for me for my birthday since I've been trying to start an herb garden with no success. I am notorious in my family for killing every plant I've ever tried to grow and I have never been able to keep anything alive or grow new plants, until this. Within 2 weeks, all but one of my pods had sprouted and they are growing super fast. When I reached out to AeroGarden regarding my pod that didn't sprout (dill, usually difficult even under the best conditions outside) they immediately processed a shipment to get me a new, replacement pod. Amazing customer service, great variety of seeds available. I can't wait to try them all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect little garden! My mother got my family two of the Harvest for Christmas and we have loved them! We're growing the heirloom salad mix in one and tomatoes in the other. It's been less than two months and we've already harvested A TON of lettuce for salads, and little green tomatoes have fruited as well. We have lots of wildlife in our neighborhood that eat our outdoor gardens, so this has been a perfect way to easily and successfully grow produce.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Never been so disappointed! I bought 2 for myself and got my grandchildren one so they could experience for themselves the satisfaction of growing something. Well the flowers I sent to my granddaughter to grow, never flowered and instead of getting all three pods she only got 2. She has been disappointed and she is only 8 years old. My grandson's are happy with theirs thank goodness. I was not able to get my thyme to grow, supposed to be guaranteed! It is now month later and after many calls and emails I finally received it last week. Just don't think I will do this again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Aerogarden customer service is absolutely abysmal. Wish I never bought this thing based on the response I've gotten! I've had so many issues with my aerogarden Harvest and I wanted to downsize to the smaller model. Aerogarden has refused to exchange my product. Additionally, each time I receive an email, it's from a different representative. Also, more than half of my herbs are in terrible shape. They've offered to replace seed pods, but since 2 of my herbs are fully grown, I'm afraid I'll have to restart my entire garden. Don't waste your time, just spend the money and buy herbs at the grocery.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I feel like a nature goddess I love my Aerogarden Harvest. I'm the kind of person who cant even keep succulents or cacti alive for long. But even being less nurturing than an actual desert, I have managed to cultivate a whole mess of fresh herbs and greens with this thing. Once you set it up, this thing basically runs on autopilot. The grow light and water pump operate on an automated timer. The lights remind you when it's time to feed your little plant babies or top off the water tank. It's basically foolproof. If I can do it, anyone can. One note before buying: the grow light is VERY bright, so keep that in mind when deciding where to place your setup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Stylish On My Kitchen Counter Finally, a system that goes well with the decor. Since my kitchen is the main room for social gatherings, I’d like to have the area functional and presentable. I’m glad that AeroGarden is expanding the style and color of the models. I can’t wait to purchase the Harvest 360 and place them on plant stands around the house as I’m out of counter space. After a week, the basil and dill have sprouted. I’m glad I took the plunge and purchased the system. I can’t stop looking at it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from customer service could be better I love my harvest but did have an issue with my lemon balm getting burned or something and the mint didn’t sprout (so I thought after 2 weeks) I emailed aerogarden and never for a response back so that is a tad annoying luckily the mint did finally sprout and the lemon balm does seem to be doing a little better. I did some research an am finding out that all plants need different levels of nutrients so not all plants are compatible together and the feeding needs to be adjusted and ph levels should be checked for a better results. So there is more to it than aerogarden led me to believe butvit does work well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great starting system I bought my first 2 harvest units last spring and I love them. Then this fall I bought my first bounty basic. I now own 4 bounty basics. The harvest is a great beginners unit. I have ussmed on strictly as a seed starter and it is fantastic. The bounty cost more but it is so worth the cost. Holds up to 9 plants instead of six. Bounty comes with a growth rack for tall plants. And the light is bigger and raises much higher allowing taller plants. And you can set the light cycle for your preference. Last but not least the harvest tells you when water is low. Bounty display shows Full, Med, and Low. Love the Harvest as my starter. Must have my bounty basic.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lightweight After buying an Elite from Costco and growing herbs in my it, I fell in love with the Aerogarden. I decided to buy another one but was looking for something smaller. The Harvest is fairly new and smaller, yet supposed to be similar in growing so I bought it. Very easy to set up but very flimsy. The pods don't fit in nicely and keep 'popping' out. The area of to fill water is cheaply done and I ended up using the Aerogrow reservoir to water it as I found it difficult to open once the salad greens started growing. I ended up throwing out the salad greens as I found them very bitter and after cleaning the unit I am growing herbs again. Another difference between the Elite and Harvest is that the lights don't rise as high on the Harvest so I'll need to keep the herbs short. I regret getting this unit and should have just gotten another Elite. If you can, buy a larger unit - you'll be happier in the end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I’m so excited I can not wait for my herbs to grow! I have already begun to think of the many recipes I will try to use my gourmet herbs. I am completely in awe. The light is so bright that it lights up my whole house. If I turn every light off and stand I front of my house I can see the light. I put it in the den until my plants sprouts so I hope it doesn’t bother the neighbors. It was really easy to put together and that was my favorite part. I love my aero garden!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! I got to start a new garden within a couple of months because the petunias grew so fast and starting blooming, that they were bursting at the seams and covered up the one tomato plant that I put in there with them. I've transplanted the petunias into the garden and they're gorgeous. Now that I've moved the petunias, the tomatoes are going nuts!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it I have had this for 5 days and my Thymes has sprouted already. I'm excited! I'm allergic to grass and pollen, so I could never garden without having sever side effects. But with the Aerogarden, I can enjoy the pleasures of gardening without worrying about my allergies. I'm excited, first time gardening and it is easy, add the pods, add water, turn on the light! This is the easiest way of gardening for those who are unable to enjoy the outdoors.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lights don’t last I bought this almost 3 months ago and other than the fact that one of the pods never germinated, I have been happy until today when suddenly the lights don’t work. It seems totally dead although the pump continues to run so I know it’s getting electricity. No one answers the customer service number. The last time when I sent an email it took a long time to get a response. I’m very disappointed because my grandchildren are coming to visit and were looking forward to seeing this thing working, and now they won’t get to see it. I have requested a new unit from Aerogarden since it’s warrantied for one year, and my assumption is that they will send me a brand new one overnight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lettuce farming I am enjoying this garden. I have used the smaller version and this one is more convenient to use. The display is clear, the fill tank is easily accessible and the light has good vertical motion. I will say that growing lettuce requires a great deal of water. The tank needs some refilling a few times/week. The other factor that requires some experimentation with full grown lettuce is finding the right positioning for the light. If it is too close, the edges of the leaves tend to be a bit burned by the light. Overall, however, it's great to have fresh lettuce through the winter. I harvest enough for a generous salad for two every few days.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good luck reaching customer service when issue I bought this about 4 weeks ago and everything was growing fine, just as time comes to start harvesting I wake up one morning and all the lights are flashing on and off and then the power goes out and I cannot restart now my lettuce has all died and no response from customer service due to covid. No calls accepted and emails not returned now I am stuck with something that is useless to me for a hefty price. In the meantime the day before I was so happy that I ordered another one from them now I will be stuck with that as well.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I bought this as a gift for someone I never heard back. However, I've been getting nagging emails from Miracle Gro ever since. For that reason alone I wouldn't recommend buying from this company as their customer service is annoying and tone-deaf. I made a purchase. I didn't sign up for an email list--these guys didn't even register that the purchase I made wasnt even for myself. They just started spamming me on a regular basis. After seeing the product and realizing that I would be locked in to a set catalog of crops, generating permanent income to Miracle Gro, I decided against buying one for myself. If I do ever get a hydroponic system, I want to be able to grow whatever I choose to, not their standard varieties.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gardening indoors This is my second aerogarden, I also have the bounty basic. This Harvest model grows 6 plants at a time. It doesn't have a screen, but I would say you actually need to be a bit more tech savvy to use it. With both aerogardens, you can't really fill all the slots and get full sized plants, they just don't really have space. Removing a couple pods and running under capacity helps the plants reach their true potential. We also got the seed starting kit and are loving it so far but have not transplanted yet. It's great to be able to garden year round. We love the basil on homemade pizza and fresh lettuce complementing anything you can think of.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from From skeptic to green thumb I got my first aerogarden as a gift and it sat in the box for almost a year before I set it up. It was cool but I wasn't certain it was anything I was going to use. Well, that garden is now on its second planting and I bought a second one to grow lettuce. I couldn't be more impressed. It is simple to set up, efficient both in use of space and energy, and the herbs I grew the first round were so delicious and plentiful. At one point I was running out of uses for the basil because it was growing so fast. I went from kind of skeptical to someone who recommends this product to everyone I know.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fun way to grow veggies inside and off season This Aerogarden is fun and has encouraged my picky kid to be more excited about herbs and veggies. I got the seed starting tray and it worked great to produce heathy starts in a very short time. I was less than satisfied because it quickly grew algae after 4 weeks the first time I used the system, and the algae came back after 2 weeks the second time after I drained, rinsed, and refilled it. Also, the 6 pod system doesn’t produce much food. It’s more for the novelty than for food production. A couple leaves of lettuce for a sandwich, a pinch of basil for a pasta sauce…it’s enough to be fun but not a substantial amount of food.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is the best ! First off Aero Garden is a great thing to own. Did you ever go in to the store , and look at the price of Herbs ? Way too high right ? You never know where they came from or who touched them. Have you every tried to grow plants ? You tried in the past and they just die on you. This will not happen with the Areo Garden ! Just place your pods into it. Then add water then wait. You will have fresh food all the time. Give it a try and trust me. You will thank Areo Garden every time you eat from it. Great to teach kids in a class room also. Get yours today. John LaRance from Branson , Missouri.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Harvest Model 1 - light timer is failing Bought this on Black Friday. We have had other AeroGrow models and been happy with them. We set this one up and for the last two days have noticed that it comes on fine at 8:00am but turns off between 7:00 and 8:00pm, not the 15 hours it is supposed to do. That's not going to work with the plants. Have emailed the company and am hopeful they will be able to either suggest a "fix" as there is no way we see to adjust the lights, or replace the unit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not for me I bought an aero garden harvest model and extra supplies for continued growing. My planted seeds germinated and died within a week of germination. I tried the gourmet herb kit and only 2 of the 6 germinated. It is guaranteed to germinate but you get no one when you call the number provided. Tried customer service thru email and a week later I still have no response.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Herbs Galore A present from hubby at Xmas. Set up around Mid Feb. Enjoyed watching the progress of plant pods. Mint has struggled. Tai basil is licorice like in taste. Dill is a powerhouse. Basil is steady. And parsley is leggy. Maybe should of pruned more in beginning. Instructions on care that would help. Tai has flowers now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for indoor growing I received my AeroGarden Gourmet Herbs Seed Pod Kit and I am so excited. This kit very easy to set up. You simply add water and plant food to the bowl, then place the seed pods into the deck and cover with the Grow domes. This kit also includes LED grow lights. I love that the lights automatically turn on and off in 15 hour increments. It will also remind you to add water and plant food. This is perfect for growing herbs inside during the colder months. My kit is all set up and I am anxiously waiting to harvest some fresh herbs!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Harvesting salad greens I love my Harvest garden and have "harvested" three salads from it so far, and the lettuces are still growing taller and thinker than ever! The pump only goes on for 5 minutes very hour, and I can hardly hear it. However, I also ordered the Sprout and am not happy with it because the loud, noisy pump runs constantly and never shuts off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good! Bought these for myself, love them! Of course I wanted the Farm XL, but had to see if they worked for me first. The only gripe I have is that one arrived and the display is off-kilter (see pic). It doesn't appear to affect operation, but.. well.. Anyway, tomatoes in one, lettuces in the other, and a giant pack of flowers for later. Perfect for those with little free time to be puttering about in the garden :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it!! I really love my aero garden. I have the heirloom lettuce pods and they're growing beautifully and I'm enjoying my salads. Was a bit of a bummer that I bought my garden for $25 more than the reduced pricing that showed up a few weeks later. Was told they reserve the right to change their pricing (which, of course, they do) and that since I bought it more than 7 days ago, I was not entitled to a price adjustment. I get it, but it would have been nice. Takes a while to get a response from customer service these days, but that's understandable during the pandemic. But back to the garden itself.....I love it. Am really thrilled with it, despite having overpaid. :)

What do you have to purchase after the first harvest?

Asked by: Jski
On average, the seed pods should last around 3-5 months as the plants will continue to grow over time till the end of their life cycle. Once they have ceased, be sure to clean the AeroGarden Harvest throughout and you are ready for a new set of seed pods to plant in the AeroGarden. You can find a wide variety of seed pod on our website AeroGarden.com to try!

I just started a new group of seeds. Why are some of my pods growing mold?

Asked by: Mom2Many
Sometimes people notice a white fuzz developing on the surface of their grow sponges. This is a beneficial fungi called mycelium, and is in fact a beneficial fungi because it helps facilitate water uptake. It is a sign of healthy, organic, biological activity; it does not harm your plants, prevent germination, or in any way impact the quality or edibility of your plants. The beneficial fungi will soon disappear from view as your AeroGarden plants outcompete it for light, nutrients and water.
