Frequently Asked Questions

How do AeroGardens work?

AeroGardens are designed to help you grow your own herbs, vegetables, salad greens or flowers at home. Our Seed Pod Kits are compatible with every model of AeroGarden. Planting with Seed Pods is fun and easy! Just insert the pre-seeded pods in your garden, add water, and the patented, specially formulated Liquid Nutrients. Most plants germinate within 7-14 days, are ready for harvesting in 4-6 weeks, and will keep producing continuous harvests for up to 6 months and longer. Indoor gardening can’t get any tastier or simpler!

How do I prune Herbs?

Pruning your herbs is important to keep them growing and healthy in your AeroGarden. You can start pruning when the plants are about 2 inches tall. We recommend only pruning about ⅓ of the plant at a time. When growing herbs, keep in mind basil usually sprouts within a week of planting, and grows rapidly. Be sure to prune your basil from the top as needed to keep the grow lights at the lowest position until all the herbs have a chance to catch up. Raising the grow light to accommodate the basil can slow or stop growth for other smaller, slower-growing herbs.

Can I grow different types of plants at the same time?

Yes, you can mix different types of plants in your AeroGarden to grow a variety of herbs, salad, veggies, and flowers if you’d like. If you are growing different plant types, it is important to prune the taller and bushier plants as they grow to allow plenty of space and light for the shorter and smaller plants.

How do I clean my AeroGarden before starting a new garden?

After each planting, we recommend cleaning and sanitizing your AeroGarden for the best results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seeing Is Believing My husband bought this for me for Christmas. I love it. Heirloom Salad Greens. First week lowered the light, and left the domes on, and when they started growing I took the domes off. Day 14 raised the light and they are growing just beautiful. Will raise the light when they keep getting taller and taller. Feed the plants every 2 weeks, I look at the water level, but it will tell you when to add water and plant food. Can't wait to eat the different salad greens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features & great idea! I received this product and set it up with my children the day after we received it. I am a homeschool mom of 2 and are using this as a part of our science curriculum. It was so easy to set up and after the 4th day we have seen growth. This is such a great idea for my household since we use the herbs daily anyway. I absolutely love the digital screen that tells you how many days and when to water. It's fantastic!!! I would highly recommend to anyone and have already bought more for my family for the holidays.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best choice This is my second AeroGarden and I love the thinner, sleeker, design. The light is much thinner and the sage color is very classy. I loved that this garden allowed me to select what pods I wanted so I chose Heirloom Lettuce. I was ecstatic they all grew, unlike many of the other pods I’ve purchased. AeroGarden always replaces pods that don’t grow but the timing is always off and the other pods are too big to then start a new one. The lettuces all came in silver foil packaging which I think might keep them fresher. I have been growing lettuce for less than 2 months and have had multiple harvests for 2-4 people. Will definitely continue growing lettuce!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Basil bonanza I bought this in May 2020. Everything sprouted and the two basil pods went nuts. After 6 months all but the Basil had died. (I think the basil roots choked everything else). I bought 3 more thyme pods and inserted them after clipping back some of the Basil roots and removing one of the basil plants. Only one of the new thyme seed pods sprouted, but even it died after two weeks. I'm undeterred and think the Cost of my original purchase has been offset by the amount of $ we saved on Basil alone. I have bought the smallest size garden and am planning to have that one be dedicated for Basil. Hopefully, this will solve the problem.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from CUSTOMER SERVICE? Shocking how out of balance the sales and customer service department are. I bought a HARVEST ELITE in spring and all was going well until one day, 3 months after use, it died suddenly. Something went wrong and I still don't know what, I am STILL waiting for somebody to return a call, send a new one or send parts. As soon as it broke, I sent info, a photo, explanation, all numbers on the machine, etc. When somebody did eventually reply to my email, they asked for photo, explanation, all numbers. They had that info and my account details but nobody is reading the emails properly. This happened a few weeks ago and I am no closer to getting a replacement. And yet, before I made the purchase, the emails and sales pitches were plentiful. I have to say, as a consumer, this is the WORST customer service I have ever had. You can't get anybody on a phone, you barely get an email. I love growing food in my Aerogardens, I have 3 of them: Bounty, Farm, Harvest. But if something goes wrong, watch out, nobody is there to help.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my indoor gardens! I have two aero gardens and ordered one as a gift for my daughter. We love love love them. I have lettuce growing like crazy and my cherry tomatoes are doing well, too. It's so nice to have some fresh veggies in the winter time. I'll use the gardens to do my starter plants in the spring for flowers and veggies to plant outdoors. I may have to get a third garden in the fall!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Read the reviews and then you decide I read the reviews and accepted the limitations (i.e not a lot of space to grow and some issues with the electronics). If you want to grow tomatoes, you need to devote the entire grower to that plant, and with the Harvest Elite size, you can only grow 2 plants at a time. Aside from the space, you have to be prepared to self pollinate the tomatoes (I used a USB fan and a water pick), think I over did the pollination though as some of the tomatoes are rotting instead of ripening. Also, be aware that they didn't protect the water sensor from root growth, when the plants reach a certain size, the sensor stops detecting that you are out of water. Not a big deal, as it takes about a week to get low, so I just check it and refill it on weekends. The tomatoes have started to ripen, but not to the point they are edible (uneven ripening too, think it may be the lights), so I can't tell yet if all the time and effort are worth it. Will post when I know.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great way to start herbs and veggies My AG was a Christmas gift & I do absolutely love it. Once the herbs grew in I really enjoyed them for several months. I encountered a couple issues with algae growing and infecting the entire basin, but after doing a thorough rinse and wiping everything including the seed pods with peroxide it subsided.TIP- KEEP the little paper circles covering the seeds until your plant is too big, then cut the circles in half and let them hug your plant stems over the holes to prevent more algae growth due to light reaching the seed pods. Use q-tips and peroxide to dab the top of the pods to prevent algae growth. At first the plants were hearty and the basil leaves were HUGE and aromatic! I had to trim them constantly to keep them from touching the light at the highest setting. I noticed over time the leaves started to get smaller and the leaves of my Genovese basil were starting to mutate and grow kind of gnarled. I had to refill water almost daily and the pump seemed to be making more noise than usual. After lifting the top I realized the roots from my 3 plants were completely entwined and had taken up the entire basin. They were growing into the pump and up through the spouts. I'm a gardening noob so I didn't even consider this as a possibility, and I hadn't seen anything about root trimming in the directions. I can't imagine what the roots would have looked like if I had all 6 plants growing like they do in the photos. I had tried potting my mint in soil without removing the plastic pod holder and now the leaves are dwarfed. For the basils and parsley I ended up doing a major root trim, used garden shears to cut out the entire plastic pod holders, and replanted my herbs into soil pots. I was worried they wouldn't survive but after a week they're starting to bounce back! So keep in mind, if you want to keep your plants in the Aerogarden long term, you need to trim the roots regularly, its best to trim no more than 20% of the plant at any given time. Otherwise, the Aerogarden is really great to use to start plants and then repot them before their roots get too tangled in each other or too hard to remove the plastic. Can't wait to get more started!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tasty…tasty! I like fresh herbs for pasta, salads, and now, drinks. I had been spending $3 plus each time that I wanted to use "fresh" herbs in something that I was cooking. Of course those are "freshly" cut herbs and don't hold up well on the counter or in the refrigerator. I also tried buying potted herb plants but I generally had to keep those outdoors where the plants were subject to bugs and limited to warm seasons (Chicago tends to have REAL winters.) I've wanted an AeroGarden for a long time but being on a limited fixed income I was hesitant to spend the money. Finally, in December 2017 I went ahead and bought an Aerogarden Harvest Elite. The lamp section can only be raised 12 inches but I figured that was perfect as the AeroGarden fits on my kitchen counter just under the cabinets, I chose the herb assortment and "planted" Thai and Genovese basil, mint, curley parsley, and thyme. AeroGarden suggests that pruning your growing herbs/plants is recommended to get the best harvest. It took some 30-40 days for my AeroGarden to get "overrun" with herbs that needed to be pruned daily as the growth. Now, I have to figure out how fast and how much I can eat of all the herbs. To that end I've begun making vodka gimlets with basil and mint. Tasty…tasty! I can now understand how people would like to have more than one AeroGarden. If I were to buy another, I would get one that allows for a 24 inch elevation of the grow-light. That's because the herbs grow "like crazy." I often think about the inventor of AeroGarden and what he or she went though considering all the details that needed to be incorporated. I'm going to buy more seed pods but I may plant only 4 rather than the 6 that can be accommodated. That's to allow me more room to harvest the herbs. My personal favorites include: basil, dill, and mint but there are quite a few others I would like to try including arugula, cilantro, Italian parsley, and some peppers. Looks like I may need to buy another AeroGarden soon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is absolutely the best!!! Received this as a Christmas Gift, and it is the absolute best. Have been growing my AeroGarden for 116 days now, have eaten 2 types of lettuce, tomatoes and have used fresh, basil, thyme and parsley. Only negative is there really isn’t much info given with the kit itself, thank goodness for all the useful YouTube videos.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Product not quality at All, Buyer Beware. Almost 6 weeks and just one tiny parsley stem, and other pods have white(mold?). Followed directions to a tee and thought this was the answer to winter gardening here in the Northeast. When I first set it up I wasn't sure as some buttons seemed to stick. I'll try to be patient and wait and see if the other 5 pods are going to do something. I'll go back to the grocery store and buy small plants. They always work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bright! A little too bright. Good: things grow! It works! Much wow! Really looking forward to having herbs within snipping distance in the kitchen. Less than good: The grow light is so bright that we had to stash the whole contraption in a corner. And cover it with a couple of towels when we're trying to watch movies. We opted for an herb pack, which means that the pods need 17 hours of light, so the time without light is quite short.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective product. Terrible customer service Received a defective product. Lights began to fail after 5 days of use. Called the number provided several times over the span of two weeks & no one answered. Filed a complaint with the credit card company & someone from AeroGarden finally contacted to initiate a return. Terrible customer service

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes me happy! Oh my goodness, I’m in love!! My plants grew within two days of planting in this garden and my tomato plants just got so large I had to replant them! I will start all of my summer seeds this way and keep an indoor garden going as well. It has been a lot of fun and a real emotional boost!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective aerogarden This was a belated Christmas present. I just set it up today and I am so very disappointed! Defective - The buttons don’t work, I can set the clock but the other buttons don’t work correctly. The light comes on but then quickly goes out. I cannot select the type of plant and can’t get the light to stay on. I would like to return and either get my money refunded or get a replacement that works. Marsha White

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Add a little joy to your home Very easy to set up. The program tells you everything you need to do throughout the growth of the plants. The water basin is easy to clean. The best part is seeing the sprouts appear within just a few days and continue to grow toward the light at an amazing speed. Within 3 weeks we harvested several basil leaves that were truly the best tasting we ever had! The light is so powerful, our herbs outgrew the system within 2 months and had to be moved to a larger hydroponic set up where they are still going strong. Round 2 is already being harvested. Seeing something grow and bring beauty to my kitchen adds joy at a time when the pandemic has created much stress.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Convenient and easy, but kinda cheesy The product works like it says on the box; plants grow effortlessly and quickly. I'm definitely happy with my purchase, but I wish it were constructed of slightly more durable materials. Whenever I clean it or adjust the lights, I'm concerned that I'll break it. Also, the plastic filter in the bottom of the tank easily gets clogged with roots; it would have been nice to see a different design that is more cleanable. It's not a dealbreaker, and I love the convenience of the garden, but the materials make it feel like something that I paid $50 for, not $130. So far it's lasted me two months, and I have six full-size herbs that I've harvested multiple times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy this. First, it just works. Insert pod, keep it watered, give it food, you will get plants. The leaves on my herbs are huge, tasty, always fresh, and - since I tend to only cook on weekends - seemingly inexhaustible. My only recommendation is to get more pod bays than you at first want - I wish I had room for more. My only criticism is that the pods tend to crowd. I trim pretty aggressively, and still my thyme and sage keep trying to take the light from my rosemary, which is apparently a short-stemmed variety. If you have light issues, a brown thumb, or just want plants without hassle, buy this, you will not regret it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Unhappy with latest AeroGarden Not happy with this AeroGarden Harvest Elite. I am growing tomatoes, the small ones. I have had no luck with the tomatoes. They are growing very tall and the lights will not go high enough. It is also difficult to use menu to set anything. Buttons don't seem to work correctly. I had intended to give one to a friend at Christmas but decided against it. I have another AEROGARDEN that I like much better. Over three to four years I have had three - four gardens and the last one was not as good as the older ones. The only improvement is the led lights over the old light bulbs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Svelte Aerogarden for Small Spaces This is a svelte Aerogarden that fits perfectly on my kitchen window sill and performs as promised. I like the warning light that tells you when water is low or when it is time to add fertilizer. Two downsides: the light does not extend nearly high enough for fast growing herbs such as basil and, more seriously, the unit is too small to allow all the plants to flourish. The ones on the ends are fine, but the ones in the middle quickly are cut off by those around the edge. I realize I may not have pruned aggressively enough, but I still think the container is a bit too small for that many pods. I just got some of the covers to use on empty spaces and next time I will try planting only in every other space.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Moldy herbs I bought this to replace an old Aero Garden. I’ve had great success for the most part when using my older unit, with the exception of a few pods not sprouting. I followed directions and was excited for my future new crops. I had a few that sprouted right away, but noticed one had mold on top of the surface of the soil. I replaced it right away with an extra pod. All of my pods sprouted and ALL with MOLD. it is affecting the taste of all the herbs I planted. I’m ready to call it quits. Not worth the hassle any longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fresh herbs right in my kitchen! I bought this AeroGarden about a month ago and my plants are thriving! So fun to watch them grow and the maintanience was really easy. Only downside to this, expect occasional fruit flies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the colors I have three smaller (3 pod) AeroGardens. I bought one 6 pod Harvest Elite and liked it so much I bought a second one. Now I'm not even using my 3 pod gardens. I've had incredible success with salad greens, beet greens, rosemary and dill. My salad greens and beet greens (they're really red) grow so big I usually can't keep 6 plants growing at one time. I almost never have to buy romaine or salad greens at the grocery store and am often giving away my produce. The lights so help brighten up dull Cleveland winters.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Complete disappointnent Words cannot describe how disappointed we are in this. It was a gift, and when I found out the price I was shocked. We started trying to grow herbs the beginning of June, and so far one pod has a 1 inch stem sticking up. That's it. Waiting for contact from company. Would like a refund.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loving my new little garden!!!!!! I love my AeroGarden! I have looked at them for awhile and finally broke down abought one and some accessories & seeds to go with it. Instantly the seeds are growing - I already have lettuce that looks healthier than any lettuce I've ever grown in my garden & tomato plants that are already 2 inches tall! I am seriously thinking of ordering another one! 5 Stars - customer service is spectacular - I can't say enough - I would HIGHLY recommend!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fried tomatoes I already have one aero garden that I love but the light element on this one doesn’t raise enough when you are growing tomatoes from an aero garden kit. Mine grew well until I couldn’t raise the light element anymore and it fried them even when I turned the light off after a couple of hours twice a day. Sorry can’t recommend this model

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy a green thumb I'm not the best at growing plants and keeping them alive, but the Aerogarden makes it look like I have a magical green thumb. The only problem is that I started too early in the winter and my apartment is now overrun with plants that I can't put outside for another few weeks. I started with the Lettuce seed pods and then moved to six grow anything pods with seeds I bought at the store. They've all grown beautifully and continue to thrive under the grow light. My only regret is that I didn't get one of the Aerogardens that work with the app. This one would be perfect for my parents, who prefer minimal technology.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the fresh lettuce! This was a Christmas present and I am enjoying it! Currently in day 27 of salad greens. Have made 6 salads so far with plenty of greens for tonight. They also tasty, although “softer” than grocery store purchased. So easy - the unit tells you to water, feed, programs the lights. Next will be herbs. I’ll probably have 2 or 3 of these before long...!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Birthday present ever! My boyfriend bought me this for my birthday and I absolutely love it! Tonight we had our second salad even though I've been using the lettuce in sandwiches and stuff too. My basil is growing nicely in fact I'm hoping within another week or so I'll have enough for pesto it smells so good I can't wait! This AeroGarden is wonderful I planted in the past where I've had potting soil and miss and need the fun and this is so easy and clean! Plus it's fun! I cook a lot and my boyfriend so how much I loved the Harvest Elite that he bought me a bounty Elite which is on its way and I can't wait because they're I'm growing some taller stuff and tomatoes! Anyway I can't say good enough things about it I love my AeroGarden thank you AeroGarden for making gardening so effortless and enjoyable!
